In the process of rapidly releasing Downloads we migrated to a new video codec, changed the DRM mechanism, iterated through UX designs with customers, integrated a new Android media player, and even released it with an AB test. We're excited to talk about the challenges and opportunities that our Android team faced while building this well-received experience.Â

Francois' talk will focus on the research, learning, and development that facilitated playback of downloaded content. Francois has been managing Android development at Netflix for over four years, and has worked on mobile for much longer. He carries a deep understanding of Android's integration with various hardware and SoC systems and is instrumental in getting Netflix to work seamlessly in a fragmented ecosystem.
Ashish is a full-stack Android expert with experience in the areas of streaming, multimedia, networking, and graphics, as well as low-level architectures and protocols. He played a critical role in building out the Downloads experience and his talk will cover areas such as the Downloads Service on Android, offline metadata, and performance considerations uncovered while creating a great UI.
